The life of the Church revolves around a different calendar than the normal January to December calendar. The Church does not celebrate the summer holidays (Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day). There is no space in our calendar for the upcoming holiday of Mother’s Day. That doesn’t mean Mother’s Day is unimportant. Mother’s Day can be a day of celebration. It’s a day when we celebrate the women in our lives who have raised us. Many of us have a wonderful relationship with our mother; for others the relationship is a bit more complicated. For some, Mother’s Day is a painful reminder that they might never have children or that their mother has passed away.
As we honor and thank the many kinds of mothers in our lives this weekend, I would also like to remember and pray for those for whom this day is not as joyful. Holy and Almighty God, We pray for those who have lost a child, For those who struggle with infertility, For those who have chosen not to be mothers, For those who may not have had a healthy relationship with their mother or their child, and for those who have lost their mom, especially those who are spending their first Mother’s Day without them. Remind them, God, that your love is shown to them in many ways, through many people, and help us be messengers of that love today. ~Amen Peace, Travis Segar Pastor for Care and Community
