Deciding to take the chance on going to a new church is risky. For some, they are new to the area and are looking to find a place where they can find connection and community. For others, they are leaving a different congregation (for a whole host of reasons) and they are also trying to find a place where they can call home. There are the ones who have never really thought about church before. They grew up not going to church or even being exposed to it. At most, they might go to a Christmas service when grandma asked them to go. They come in with no idea of what to expect.
But they all have one thing in common. They are new. Most visitors don’t walk around with a sign that says, “I’m new here.” The new person doesn’t walk in and say, “Hey I’m new here so I could really use some extra encouragement, some friendly smiles, and maybe a check-in to see if I need anything or have any questions (that I might be a little afraid of asking).” While not every new person is thinking those things, every time I treat the other person like they might be thinking this, things seem to go better. See you Sunday. Travis Segar Pastor for Care and Community
