Open hearts. Open doors. Capital Campaign
A church with doors that don’t open is pretty useless. Open Doors provide a welcome access to the community inside. To Open Doors, however, it takes Open Hearts. Those Open Hearts are what give the doors a reason to be open; those hearts keep the hinges oiled and the building ready to receive God’s guests. Those hearts provide the servants who make what happens inside the doors spill over into the streets and into the world.
Holy Trinity is seeking to raise $300,000 for our Open Hearts. Open Doors. capital campaign. |
Praise be to God for the generosity of members and friends of HTLC! Through your giving we are bound together in the mission to Share God’s Love in our community and world. Without your offerings, Christ would be less present in this community and around the world.
What does it look like to Share God’s Love? First, it happens when the lights are on: Community groups meet in space we provide; Pause Groups gather to study God’s Word and share in fellowship; Church school and confirmation classes learn the story that makes them who they are; people gather to worship around God’s grace received in worship through Word and sacrament; the food pantry serves those in need; and the homeless find welcome and shelter here.
Sharing God’s Love also happens outside the building when the lights are off: Quilts and kits are sent to those that desperately need them through Lutheran World Relief; resources make their way around the world to support refugees and the homeless in Central Iowa and feed the starving in South Sudan… and much more.
Gifts to our Open Hearts. Open Doors. campaign will fund a number of desperately needed repairs to our building, including replacing a worn out heating and cooling unit, fixing a leaky roof, and replacing broken or missing signs. We will also tithe to our mission partners: The Southeastern Iowa Synod, ELCA World Hunger Appeal, and Lutheran Services of Iowa’s Refugee Resettlement Program.
As long as there is brokenness in the world we are called to Share God’s Love. Thank you for your loving gifts.

Why are we raising an additional $300,000 this year?
Each year leaders of the congregation work to present a balanced budget. For the last decade or so, projected income has been short of the estimated expenses. In the past, we equalized income and expenses by doing two things.
What will the additional money accomplish?
At our 2019 Annual Meeting, we voted to undertake a campaign to raise an additional $300,000 to fund important projects that could not be funded in a balanced budget.
Together, we can accomplish these projects:
The Congregation Council, will have the authority and responsibility to schedule, prioritize and adjust the plan. Decisions will be guided by seasonal concerns and the ability to schedule work. This is a year-long campaign; so we plan to have this all completed within a twelve-month period.
Each year leaders of the congregation work to present a balanced budget. For the last decade or so, projected income has been short of the estimated expenses. In the past, we equalized income and expenses by doing two things.
- First, we deferred building repairs and improvements. There comes a time when those expenses can no longer wait. Doing the mission and ministry of the church requires “open doors” – a building that welcomes and allows us to do what needs to be done.
- Second, as a last resort, we cut the amount we shared with the mission of the Church beyond our doors. This has diminished our partnership with the Synod, the ELCA and others.
