![]() We don’t like to admit it, but so much of our self-worth gets wrapped up in external things—the opinions of others, our performance, our success, even our failures. We search for validation, hoping that if we achieve enough or do enough, we’ll finally be seen, finally be enough. We all have a deep longing to be seen, valued, and loved—a search for identity and belonging that shapes so much of our lives. But too often, we look in the wrong places. We chase success, seek approval, and measure our worth by what we accomplish or how others perceive us. We invest in things that were never meant to define us, hoping they will finally make us feel like we are enough.
And yet, there is grace in realizing we’ve been searching in the wrong place. Because that realization is an invitation—an invitation to return to the truth that we are already seen, already loved, already known by God. Lent isn’t about proving anything. It’s not about performing holiness or earning God’s favor. It’s about reorienting our hearts, turning away from the things that keep us chasing affirmation and turning toward the God who calls us beloved. So maybe the question isn’t just what we’re giving up or taking on for Lent. Maybe the deeper question is: Where have we placed our treasure? And where is Jesus leading us? Because in the end, it’s not about how others see us. It’s about where we have placed our hearts. "For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also."
