![]() This question is one asked as part of Listening Sessions happening in the ELCA through the Formation Co-Op with people who are connected to youth ministry in congregations around the country. Participants are asked to consider and share the stories of their life that demonstrate why youth ministry is important to them. For me, the answer includes stories of mentors in faith, adults who cared about me when they weren’t obligated to, even and especially when I was being difficult. As a youth, church was a safe place for me to spend time with people who loved me and wanted me to grow. My parents were divorced and I didn’t always get along with my step-parents and often found it difficult to accept their love. Church was a place that supported my family on the good days and the rough days and every day in-between.
This “why” is different for kids now. School occupies this space in the lives of many families. The community builds around the life of the school. The community gathers around a shared mission multiple times a week. They eat together. Travel together. Get sick together. Life together. So, what does this mean for the Church? When life together is no longer happening in the same ways, and yet still happening. How can we be a part of a network of support, a web of relationships that provide a soft landing for families in need of care and rest. This no longer looks like adding another event to the growing list of events that being a part of a team or choir requires families to attend. January 20-26, I am traveling to Louisville, Kentucky for training as a guide for the Formation Co-Op. I have been partnered with two ELCA congregations to guide them through a process of listening to the needs of youth in their community and discern where the spirit is leading them in youth ministry. I certainly do not claim to have answers or divine wisdom, but instead a wonder and an excitement to be a part of these conversations and see where they take us. How would you answer that question? What is your “Why” for youth ministry? Why is youth ministry something that is important to you? How has youth ministry formed your faith and the faith of your children? I would love to hear your stories and listen to themes that emerge as Holy Trinity’s “why” for youth ministry. Peace, Ellen Rothweiler Minister for Learning [email protected]

The HTLC youth program was a resource to me from Sunday School, Kids choir, Confirmation, the Jr High Youth Program, Jr High Summer Camp, and the Senior High Youth Program while I was growing up in Ankeny. The youth program was always there, in the background, for support. It was great having friends from church that you knew you could catch at school and that there were adults at church who would assist you if needed.

Sorry Ellen, I see you are the one who went to Louisville, Kentucky. Would be interested in hearing about your project. I have seen KY has been concerned about their juvenile incarceration rate.
