LESSONS YOU LEARN AT CAMP

Lessons you learn at camp:

1. I am a part of God’s creation. The bugs that bite me and the frogs that belch in the fire swamp and lightning bugs that dance across the lawn are all created by God. I am created by God.
2. God’s creation is good. That means I am good. I can try new and hard things. I can survive a week away from the comfort of my home and the safety of my family.
3. We connect with God through creation. When we slow down and disconnect and pay attention to the trees and animals and people around us, we can know God better.

Last week, 15 kids from Holy Trinity traveled to Spirit Lake, Iowa for a week of camp at Lutheran Lakeside. Our group, mostly made up of kids in 3rd-5th grade, was split into cabins and moved in for the week. Children’s Ministry Coordinator Deb Hopkey and I stayed onsite to accompany this group of kids as they experienced all that is camp. The week held the usual suspects of heat and homesickness, but also new friends and fun games. We worshipped at the beginning and end of each day, ate dessert at most meals and found that sometimes we were bored. Boredom allowed time to try new things, things like kayaking and roller skating and the climbing wall. We learned new songs to sing about our faith, new ways to pray and new ways to care for one another. Camp was good. And as we say at camp- God is good…all the time! All the time…God is good!
