Lots of the attention to learning and growth in the church is centered on children and youth. Flowing from the promises parents make in baptism, the church helps with the shaping of young people as disciples. This is good and necessary. Yet, in our culture, we also think that once we “graduate” from school, finish the educational process in our youth, we are done, finished products with nothing left to learn. Read more at Grace Notes: https://bit.ly/htlc-gracenotes That is contrary to the life of discipleship which is lifelong. The process of spiritual transformation is constant and never complete. It is crucial for adults to grow as much as children. That is why we continue to offer opportunities to learn and grow for adults throughout the year.
One of those opportunities takes place each Wednesday evening at 7:05 PM. Adults gather to learn, grow, and be shaped by scripture, theology, and by conversation. This year we will offer five series that will help us follow Jesus. The Church in Public Life Using a little book by James Childs Jr., a leading Lutheran theologian and ethicist, we will look at the church’s teaching on the relationship between church and society with fresh eyes for a new day. This series begins October 23 and runs through November. The Book of Job Using books by Justo Gonzalez and Richerd Rohr we take a deep dive into this enigmatic book of wisdom to understand God, humanity and suffering. Desiring the Kingdom (Cultural Liturgies): Worship, Worldview, and Cultural Formation Philosopher James K. A. Smith reshapes the very project of Christian education in Desiring the Kingdom. The book focuses education on the themes of liturgy, formation, and desire. Smith's ultimate purpose is to re-vision Christian education as a formative process that redirects our desire toward God's kingdom and its vision of flourishing. In the same way, he re-visions Christian worship as a pedagogical practice that trains our love. The Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius: There are many strands of spirituality within Christian faith. The Ignatian tradition (Jesuits) are a lasting and powerful voice. The Gospel of John Amy Jill Levine’s latest book with a video presentation. “With her characteristic wit and charm, Amy-Jill Levine introduces readers to the world of the Gospel of John by unpacking the stories in their original context, along with examining how the text is read today. This book considers the Gospel of John in its entirety, moving through the Gospel and exploring the prologue, the wedding at Cana, the Samaritan woman at the well and the woman caught in adultery, the healing of the man at the pool and the man born blind, foot washing, Mary Magdalene and Doubting Thomas, and the Lamb of God.” Start a new habit and come to learn, grow, and discuss faith each Wednesday evening.
