![]() The vitality and health of a congregation is dependent on the Holy Spirit. It is hard to measure, but not impossible to see. During her recent visit, Bishop Amy Current entered Café Koinonia (where we have coffee and donuts) and was moved by how vibrant and connected people were as they shared this time of fellowship. She said it was an extension of our joyous worship. Simple gifts from God – water, wine, bread, coffee, donuts, and conversation – manifest unity, love, compassion, and hospitality. The time we spend sharing our lives over coffee and donuts is crucial to being the people of God. We call the place we gather Café Koinonia because koinonia is the Greek word in scripture that describes the close and abiding fellowship that knits us together. There is more happening in that place each week than coffee and donuts. Friends gather, concerns are shared, people check-in about the joys and struggles of life. In a very lonely world, our gathering overcomes loneliness. Coffee and donuts is ministry.
The vitality of the congregation is not only seen in the gathering of people. It is also manifest in our serving. Jesus taught that he came not to be served but to serve (Matthew 20:28). He calls us to live by that model. We are not part of a church to constantly receive from others, but to serve and provide hospitality in the name of Christ. With that in mind, we want to renew an invitation to share in fellowship between services. Participate in the Spirit-led gathering that reveals God through our joys and sorrows. We also want to ask that you not simply receive this gift, but to provide the hospitality to others. Some things to consider: • If you can eat a donut, you can serve a donut. • Individuals, couples, and whole families can do this act of service. • We will train and equip all who offer to serve. • Just 10 teams would mean that each team would only serve 5-6 times in a year! Commit to serve as Christ served by offering fellowship through the simple act of serving some coffee and donuts.
