Are you growing?

How has faith transformed you over the last six months? Six weeks? Six days? Perhaps this seems a strange question. After all, the old hymn sings about being accepted "Just as I am." Doesn't God accept us in our present state? The answer, of course, is "Yes!" However, faith is also a source of growth, a force for transformation. God in Christ accepts us, for sure, but also calls us to grow and be changed to what God made us to be.

This week a group of 14 from our congregation is having the Best Week Ever at Lutheran Lakeside in Spirit Lake, IA. Lakeside sits on 110 acres with a half mile shoreline and 3.5 miles of nature trails.

God & Gambling

Gambling is everywhere. If you watch sports on television, you have probably noticed the steady encroachment of information aimed at gamblers. Online sports books advertise aggressively making it seem that betting—and being a "winner" is as easy as dialing the phone. You can now bet on anything. You can probably find an app that will let you wager whether this article will be over or under 500 words.

The stranger next to you

It was ten degrees in Chicago, November 1986. A twenty-two-year-old walked through the cold.

He'd graduated college not long before, and grief had followed him there. His father and one of his brothers had died in a plane crash a few years earlier. He'd kept going to church for a while out of habit, but somewhere along the way his faith had quietly given out.

our new Labyrinth

One project that is part of our Capital Campaign improvements to the church grounds is the development of a memorial garden along Elm Street. A paver path, resting stones, and plantings were installed last fall. The grassy area on either side of the path will be for the interment of ashes of loved ones. This week another element of the space was finished—our new labyrinth.
