Jacob Astley found himself entangled in the turmoil of the English Civil Wars (1642-51). A Royalist, he served as the King’s Major-General of Infantry and, just before the Battle of Edgehill on October 23, 1642, he offered a heartfelt prayer in the presence of his troops. O Lord! thou knowest how busy I must be this day: if I forget thee, do not thou forget me. ~Amen This prayer is strikingly honest and deeply human. Many of us can relate to the experience of being overwhelmed by the busyness of life, only to be jolted into the realization that we’ve lost perspective. We become frustrated, self-absorbed, and forgetful of God.
If we’re fortunate, something will draw us back to our senses. In my own busy-ness of my day-to-day life, I offer up the same prayer to the God who will never forget or forsake me. If you too are busy, or even if you’re not – take a moment and rest in the assurance that God’s steadfast love for you endures forever. O Lord! thou knowest how busy I must be this day: if I forget thee, do not thou forget me. ~Amen Peace, Travis Segar Pastor for Care and Community
